Finland's most feral bands, Kieltolaki, Viemann Kolonna, Vaarinkasitys, Totuus, Sotatila, Omaisuusvahinko and Yhteiskunaan Ystavat gather forces to kick ass, but my favorite is the neck-snapping fury of Vaarinkasitys. If you hunger for bands with names you can't pronounce, get Propaganda Is Hippies in your earholes now!

Anti Cimex

Anti Cimex

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-LvJQKf6B5U/RhQ3lqhzalI/AAAAAAAAAKY/FBpud4Kf6Uc/s320/anticimex_1.jpg

Anti Cimex were a Swedish hardcore punk band, based in Skövde, Göteborg, Linköping, and Malmo, at different times, that formed in 1981.[1] They were one of the first bands to define Scandinavian hardcore punk. Their second 7", Raped Ass, is considered to be a subgenre-defining D-beat record. Scene historian Peter Jandreus describes the group as the most famous Swedish punk band of the 1977-87 era.

Their name is taken from the Swedish pest control company with the same name,[1] the name of this company, in turn, comes from the Latin name of a particular type of bedbug; Cimex.
The band
Formed in 1981, the original line-up was: Jonsson - Bass, Nillen - Vocals, Charlie - Drums, Jocke - Guitar. After rehearsing for a while, they released their first 7" EP Anarkist Attack.[1] In 1982 they kicked out Nillen. Jonsson took over the vocals part, and Conrad took over the bass playing. The next 7" EP, called Raped Ass, was released in 1983.[1] In 1984 they released another 7" EP, Victims Of A Bomb Raid.[1] In 1986 they released a mini-Lp (12") called Criminal Trap. (This 12" is also included as a bonus on the Absolut Country of Sweden CD). At this time Jocke had got tired of the band and they asked Cliff if he wanted to join the band but he said no, and the rest of the band members got tired of the problems and it resulted in the band splitting up.

In 1990 they decided to start the band again after Cliff had agreed to join, and they say that its thanks to him that they regrouped. They released the comeback album Absolut Country Of Sweden the same year, . In 1993 they released a raw live album Made In Sweden. The show was also shot on video but never released. They later released a new live 7" single Fucked In Finland and later on they released the album Scandinavian Jawbreaker. After the release of this album the band split up and the members started in other bands such as Driller Killer (Cliff),[1] and Wolfbrigade (Jonsson).

In 2005 Dead City records released the A Tribute To Anti-Cimex LP, featuring a line up of D-beat and Crust bands from all over the world that were influenced by Anti-Cimex. Notable bands include Disclose (Japan), Wolfbrigade (Sweden), Ratos de Porão (Brazil), Doom (UK), and many more.(wikipedia)

History

The band wasn't originally planning on releasing albums, appearing only on compilation albums for their first year. In 1995, however, the band began releasing singles named after the singer they had covered. They produced Billy, Diamond, Paul, Denver, Barry, Shannon, Stevens, and Elton in this manner. Their first full-length album, Have a Ball, was released July 29, 1997.

Each album by the band is themed differently: Have a Ball focuses on classic 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s songs by singer/songwriters like Elton John, Neil Diamond, and John Denver; Are a Drag consists entirely of showtunes, Blow in the Wind consists of 60s classics, Take a Break consists entirely of contemporary R&B songs by artists such as Boyz 2 Men, Lionel Richie, and Vanessa L. Williams; their fifth album, Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah, was recorded live at an actual bar mitzvah and consists of pop music from the 1960s through the 1980s by artists such as REO Speedwagon, Styx and The Beatles, as well as traditional songs like "Hava Nagila" and Love Their Country's theme is country and western songs such as The Eagles and Garth Brooks. Their latest record, Have Another Ball! has the same theme as their debut which is 60's-80's music.

They entered the studio on April 3, 2006 to work on their sixth album, Love Their Country, which was released on October 17, 2006.[3] The theme of this album is country and western, and includes covers of tracks by Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Hank Williams, Sr. and Johnny Cash.[4]. Prior to the release of the album, Fat Wreck Chords released a digital label sampler, iFloyd which included "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" by the band.[5]

In late 2006, Fat Wreck Chords released another digital label sampler Christmas Bonus, containing a previously-unreleased cover of Arlo Guthrie's "City of New Orleans".[6] In August 2006 Me First and the Gimme Gimmes were scheduled to play three dates at PNC Park after Pirates games, but after they got booed on the first night, the next two nights were cancelled. They were to play along with fireworks during the post-game "Skyblast" shows.

On December 5, 2007, Fat Wreck Chords released a flash MP3 holiday bonus sampler called Hanuk-Comp containing "The Boxer" which was originally released on the "Garf" single (released in 1997).[7] There is also a downloadable podcast that features commentary from Fat Mike and Floyd during breaks between songs in which the next album is revealed.[8] It is named Have Another Ball! and contains all the B-sides from Have a Ball. The album was released on July 8, 2008.

Their cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" has been used as the theme song for HBO's documentary series Taxicab Confessions. Their cover of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is currently featured in an ad for Microsoft's Bing search engine.(wikipedia)

J.F.A.

We Know You Suck compiles J.F.A.'s earliest recordings for the Placebo label, as well as 12 live and compilation-only tracks. The Blatant Localism EP, so important as an artifact from the initial unification of punk and skateboarding, appears here in its entirety; it's joined by the Valley of the Yakes LP, where surf anthems like "Baja" and deceptively simple, Clash-inspired screeds ("Preppy," "Johnny D.") illustrate the breadth of J.F.A.'s definitive skatepunk sound. Even if it's plagued by shoddy fidelity, the live material is nevertheless exciting as it encompasses the band's youth, aggression, and immediacy. Among the compilation tracks, alternate versions of "Preppy" and "Great Equalizer" are standouts. This release is the fourth volume of Alternative Tentacles' Skate Rock Reissue series; it includes some fabulous photography from the era, as well as liner contributions from the Vandals' Jan Akkerman, legendary skateboarder Steve Caballero, and Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Blink 182

Blink-182

http://www.htzfm.com/files/htzfm/images/blink182_10.jpg

Blink-182 is an American rock band from Poway, California[9] that predominantly plays pop punk music. The band was formed in 1992 as "Blink" with members Tom DeLonge (vocals, guitar), Mark Hoppus (vocals, bass) and Scott Raynor (drums).[10] In 1998, midway through a U.S. tour, drummer Travis Barker replaced Raynor. DeLonge left the group in early 2005, initiating an indefinite hiatus. DeLonge went on to form Angels & Airwaves, while Hoppus and Barker continued playing music together in +44. On February 8, 2009, Blink-182 announced that they are continuing as a band, with the brief statement posted on their website saying "To put it simply, We're back. We mean, really back. Picking up where we left off and then some. In the studio writing and recording a new album."[11]

DeLonge cites punk rock bands Descendents and Screeching Weasel as influences,[12] although the band's songwriting and production are driven by a pop sensibility. Blink-182 is known for their simple melodies, teen angst and lyrical toilet humor, as well as by their hit singles "Dammit", "What's My Age Again?", "All the Small Things", "Adam's Song", "The Rock Show", "First Date", "Stay Together for the Kids", "Feeling This", and "I Miss You". When playing live, the band typically play their songs at a faster tempo and often replace certain lyrics with toilet humor and various gags.[13] Over the years, the band has developed a dedicated cult following, and continues to influence a variety of musical acts.(wikipedia)

The Meteors

The Meteors

http://oldpsychobilly.de/jpg/meteors_06.jpg

Kingsofpsychobilly.com
The Meteors were started in 1980 by P. Paul Fenech (guitar and Vocals), Nigel Lewis (upright bass - later of The Tallboys, the Escalators, and the Zorchmen - see performance clip in "Trash on The Tube" feature on Youtube), and Mark Robertson (drums). Fenech and Lewis had played in rockabilly bands before, but left their former band, Raw Deal, in order to experiment with a new sound that mixed horror and science fiction lyrics with a punk rock-rockabilly crossover (as distinct from the slower, psychedelic rockabilly sound of the Cramps). This sound would later be called psychobilly.
The Meteors played their first show during Rockabilly Night at The Sparrow Hawk in north London, but after being heckled due to their cross between rockabilly and punk attitudes, decided to begin playing shows beyond just rockabilly clubs. They developed a loyal following known as "the Crazies, or Zorchmen" who invented their own dance style called "going mental," a cross between fighting, dancing and moshing. This would later be renamed "wrecking," and is still a staple of the psychobilly scene to this day. Coupled with Fenech's ritual of spitting (chicken) blood during performances, many clubs believed the band was dangerous and refused to book them. The band began playing at punk rock clubs alongside UK punk bands such as The Clash, The Damned and later Anti-Nowhere League and the UK Subs. However, unlike many punk bands, The Meteors would (and still very much do) insist that their shows be "a politics and religion free zone" in order to focus on having a good time instead of allowing disputes between fans to break out.
Due to their large cult following, The Meteors made a short film in late 1980 with comedian Keith Allen called Meteor Madness. It was released as a double feature with two-tone ska film Dance Craze in March 1981. The movie featured four songs, which made it onto the band's first vinyl single. In August 1981, the band were signed to Island Records and recorded their first full-length, In Heaven.
The Meteors have gone through many line-up changes since, with Fenech being the only original member today. The current line-up includes Simon Linden on bass and Wolfgang Hordemann (who, though not from the original line up, is the longest serving member by far after Fenech) on drums. They have 25 official albums, countless singles, and numerous re-issues and compilation appearances. They continue to record using their own recording studios (Fenech is a fully qualified sound engineer and producer) IN HEAVEN (based in an old church) and also MADDOG STUDIOS (a 58 metre high tower in Germany). These two studios are professional studios used by many bands from around the world. The Meteors have extensively toured Japan, Europe and Scandinavia, South America, and the middle east. At the time of writing, they have completed well over 5500 live shows (occasionally two per night).
P. Paul Fenech has also released six highly regarded solo albums and plays in many side projects including, the Legendary Raw Deal (rockabilly), The Surfing Dead (instrumental), Cherry and The Devil (rockabilly), The Outsiders (rockabilly). He is also a prolific and successful writer of horror film music and has written extensively for television and many other films (using a pseudonym). He is also a keen gardener and writes a weekly column under the pseudonym Percy Lupton. Nigel Lewis and Mark Robertson went on to play together in the Escalators, a psychedelic rock band which had minor success, then the Tallboys, a band best known for recording the song "Take a Walk" for the Return of the Living Dead soundtrack.(wikipedia)

http://images.artistdirect.com/Images/artd/amg/music/bio/1046998_casualties06_200x200.jpg

Blood or Whiskey is an Irish punk/folk band from Leixlip, County Kildare, Republic of Ireland. The band was formed in September 1993 taking strong influence from Shane MacGowan, as well as The Pogues and The Clash. The band originally had problems with their non-traditional music style among native Irish fans and released their first album Blood or Whiskey (Self Titled) in 1996. Several years of touring followed before the release of No Time to Explain which was followed by a tour of the USA.

After the leaving of their original lead singer, Barney Murray, in 2003, guitarist Dugs Mulhooly took over the reins as the band's frontman, Blood or Whiskey's lineup underwent many changes and in 2005 released Cashed Out On Culture, which is highly regarded as their most punk oriented of their albums, although it maintains the driving traditional melodies that are trademarks of the band's sound. In 2006, whistle player Alan Confrey died from a heart attack tragically after the band returned home to Dublin after a UK tour with Stiff Little Fingers.

The band is currently looking for a new tin whistle player and were due to release their new album on Punkcore Records sometime in late 2007, however, this was pushed back to a non-specified date. They have also recently recruited a new bass player, Peter Mullan, and toured Europe in September 2006, supporting The Misfits on some shows. The tour has been entitled "Back from the Brink" by the band. The band also supported The Pogues at their annual Christmas gig in the RDS, Dublin on the 23rd of December, 2007.

The general sound of the band is a manic mix of aggressive lyrics, punk beats and Celtic melodies.(wikipedia)

Flipside Vinyl Fanzine

Flipside Vinyl Fanzine

Being a suburban Florida punker in the '80s I hungered for new issues of Maximum Rock n Roll and Flipside. This was my connection to the greater punk world that existed beyond the flaccid dick shaped state I was stuck in. While MRR was a great resource for finding out about the Japanese and Finnish band's I was obsessed with, Flipside was a bit more light hearted and generally better written. Also their kick ass Vinyl Fanzine compilations made me like Flipside all the more. Released in 1984 on vinyl and cassette, Flipside Vinyl Fanzine Volume 1, like all the great American Punk comps of the time, had some favorites of mine (The Freeze, F, GBH) but it also hipped me to some that would become favorites (Scream, The FUs, Government Issue, AOD.) It also had some crap (ASF, TSOL.) Each band contributes an intro bit in attempt to tie in the whole fanzine theme (Scream's being the most memorable.) Maybe not as important an artifact as Let Them Eat Jellybeans or Rat Music For Rat People, but still worthy।

You Me At Six

They remained small for around two years and during an interview with Sam Darcy, Matt (Bass) said that You Me At Six started out travelling the UK on the Megabus to ensure they got to all of their early gigs. In their early material they incorporated elements of screaming, as expressed in early demos such as "Promise, Promise", "New Jersey", "Noises" and "This Turbulence Is Beautiful". Another early You Me At Six song was called "The Liar and The Lighter", this song was entirely acoustic and showed the bands early versatility with different genres, when taken concomitantly with the screaming on other early songs. Their first release was a three track EP in 2005 entitled We Know What It's Like To Be Alone. They then released a four-track EP at the start of 2007, with the songs "The Rumour", "Gossip", "Noises" and "This Turbulence Is Beautiful". They played many local and smaller venues throughout 2006, then in 2007 began playing larger venues. One of the first major breakthroughs came for the band when playing to a sold-out show at Camden Underworld in February 2007, then later with the opening slot of Slam Dunk Festival 2007 (which they later went on to headline in 2009) Their support slot with Paramore at Colchester Arts Centre also drew the attention of major media, such as Kerrang!.( wikipedia)

In 2003 Bullets and Octane released an EP, called One Night Stand Rock N' Roll Band on Criterion Records which is owned by their long-time hometown friend Jeremy Miller(Who also now is in the side project Sex N Violence and lead sings alongside Gene Louis), In 2003 they released their first and only DVD The Revelry also on Criterion Records. In 2004, they released their first album also titled The Revelry on Criterion Records, (Later Re-Released on Ares Records), which featured some remastered/re-recorded tracks off their first EP. Their second album, In the Mouth of the Young, was released in April 2006 on the bands first Major Record label, Sony BMG/RCA Records. The band also released a cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" for a local So-Cal Sampler and an unreleased original B-Side "Mannequin", which is from the "One Night Stand Rock'n'Roll Band" days, has since leaked onto the Internet. The band toured with the Family Values Tour 2006, along with such bands as Dir en grey, Korn, Flyleaf, Stone Sour and Deftones. While this marked the first time opening up to such a large audience. They were previously support to Avenged Sevenfold on Avenged's City Of Evil Tour.

Bullets and Octane have a steady growing fan base, most notably in California, and also a large portion in Europe due to touring and distribution.

Recently, the band left their record label, RCA, and are now back on ARES records.

Their new album, Song for the Underdog, became available in June 2007 on their tour with Unwritten Law. The CD became available on iTunes after June.

Recently, guitarist James Daniel decided to leave the band. For the current tour, Steve Morris (lead guitarist of Unwritten Law) has taken James's place.

In 2008 James was replaced with Kevin Tapia, who was then replaced by Kevin Besignano, also the guitarist for Sex N Violence.

Gene has given himself the task of writing and recording one song every week of 2008, he posts the new song on his myspace (January-March's song are now available to buy as an album)

They undertook a UK tour throughout October 2007 With The Knives.

Most recently Ty Smith has left the band to be a full time member in the band Godhead as well as filling in on the drums for the bands Guttermouth and The Knives. Ty's place in Bullets & Octane has been filled by Brian Totten. Original guitarist Jack Tankersly rejoined the band as well for work on their fourth album.

Bullets and Octane was released on iTunes in April 2009, returning to a sound more reminiscent of their older material than Song for the Underdog.

On July 10th 2009, the band announced that their upcoming release, Laughing In The Face Of Failure would be available from October 6th 2009. The release is made up of their two previous albums (Song for the Underdog and the self-titled album) as well as 3 B-sides: a new version of Pirates, Murder Maria and Chemicals. This is a physical release as opposed to Bullets' last release which was available only as a download.

November 2009 sees Bullets heading out on a US/UK tour with Wednesday 13's new rock project, Gunfire 76.

Four Year Strong

Four Year Strong

http://blog.pennlive.com/afterdark/2008/12/large_four-year-strong.jpg

3/5 of the current band members were in the original lineup that dates back to 2001. Dan, Alan, and Jake all attended Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester, Massachusetts, and eventually ended up meeting through introductions from mutual friends. After the departure of the original bassist, 2 or 3 years after formation, the band met Joe, eventually asking him to fill the position as the band's bassist. Four Year Strong's earlier compositions never included any keyboards, or synthesizers, but soon began to incorporate its sound into their music. The band cycled through many keyboardists, but recruited their current keyboardist Josh Lyford in late 2006. Over the past years, the band has done multiple national tours, sharing the stage with such bands as The Starting Line, Hellogoodbye, From First to Last, Every Time I Die, Meg & Dia, Hidden in Plain View, All Time Low, Mayday Parade, New Found Glory, Bayside and Steel Train. The band will be touring in February-April 2009 as part of the Taste of Chaos tour, alongside Thursday, Bring Me the Horizon, Pierce the Veil, and Cancer Bats. They are going on the Summer Co-Headline Tour w/ Set Your Goals guests include Set Your Goals, Fireworks, The Swellers, Polar Bear Club, A Loss For Words, Drive A, & Grave Maker from July 16 to August 26, 2009 (wikipedia)

Huntingtons

http://www.punknews.org/images/bands/huntingtons-1236196789.jpg

The Huntingtons were a punk band from Baltimore, Maryland which formed in 1993-1994 in the Maryland/Delaware area by Cliff Powell (aka Cliffy Huntington), Mike Holt (aka Mikey Huntington) and Mike Pierce (aka Mikee Huntington). The band is heavily influenced by The Ramones.

In 1996, their debut Sweet Sixteen was released by Flying Tart Records. A few months later, their first attempt at recording Ramones covers, entitled Rocket To Ramonia saw limited release via the Burnt Toast Vinyl label. At this point the band added a second guitarist, Tom Rehbein (later in Small Towns Burn A Little Slower). After working with producer Mass Giorgini for the band's next album, Fun And Games, Tom was replaced by Brad Ber. After the album's release in the summer of 1997, the band started touring and gained a cult following. Their big break came in 1998, when they signed to Tooth & Nail Records and released High School Rock.

After touring for the High School Rock release, the band made a conscious decision to take their Ramones sound to the extreme and released five albums in a one year period. Live: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, File Under Ramones and Get Lost all made it into stores before 1999 was over. The band also played the first of what would become two shows as Joey Ramone's backing band at CBGB's in NYC. Plastic Surgery and Split were both released to stores in January 2000. During this period the band went through multiple line-up changes before finally settling in for good with Josh Blackway (aka Jonny Huntington) on second guitar and Josh Zimmer on drums.

The band spent the remainder of 2000 on the road touring throughout the US and Europe.

The spring of 2001 saw the release of Rock 'N' Roll Habits For The New Wave (a collection of newly recorded versions of selected songs from the band's pre-Tooth And Nail era). After perfecting their Ramones-meets-90's pop-punk sound, the band went in a much more pop oriented direction for the Songs In The Key Of You album, which was released in late summer 2001.

Cliffy left the band just before the release of the Songs In The Key Of You record and after a short break, the band regrouped with new guitarist, Andy Dibiaso and toured throughout 2002.(source wikipedia)

The Offspring

http://www.quizilla.com/user_images/C/CA/CAL/CALIGIRL94/1240778326_3197_full.jpeg

The Offspring is an American rock band formed in Huntington Beach, California in 1984.[1] The band is credited, along with fellow California punk bands Green Day and Rancid, with reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States during the mid-1990s.[6] To date, The Offspring has released eight studio albums, one compilation, four EPs and three DVDs.[7] They have sold over 34 million albums worldwide[8], making them one of the best-selling punk rock acts of all time. Each album since the release of their final Epitaph album Smash has sold over a million units.[9]

Since its formation, The Offspring's line-up has included Dexter Holland (lead vocals, guitar), Noodles (lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocals), Greg K. (bass, backing vocals), and Ron Welty (drums, percussion), who left in 2003. Their current drummer is Pete Parada, formerly of Face to Face, and Saves the Day, who has been with the band since 2007.

Since the release of their 1994 album Smash, which is the best-selling independent label album of all time,[8][10][11] The Offspring has achieved commercial success over five albums, with singles such as "Come Out and Play", and "Self Esteem". The band's next three albums, Ixnay on the Hombre, Americana and Conspiracy of One, were also successful, with Ixnay on the Hombre and Conspiracy of One reaching platinum certification, and Americana achieving multi-platinum status.[12][13] Longtime drummer Ron Welty left The Offspring in early 2003, and was replaced by Atom Willard. Later that year, the band released their next album, Splinter, to moderate sales and fairly warm reviews. In 2005, The Offspring released a greatest hits album and toured in support of the compilation. Their most recent studio album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, was released on June 17, 2008 with the hit singles "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" and "Hammerhead." The Offspring are currently planning a ninth studio album, which is due for release in 2010.(source wikipedia)
